Summer is coming to a close, but there is still some fun left to be had. Here are a few events we think deserve a spot on the calendar:
When: Saturday, August 13th
Time: 5:30-9PM
Where: Cascades Event Center, 5909 Stone Creek Drive
Cost: $12-24
You’re cordially invited to a night of classic jazz, drinks at the speakeasy, and 40s garb. The second annual Jazzed About the Library benefit is just around the corner. Bring the whole family for local eats, a silent auction, photo booth, kid zone, and door prizes. If you ain’t got that swing, don’t worry. There will be plenty of entertainment as partners take to the dance floor, and a magician presents his tricks. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.
When: Tuesday, August 16th
Time: 6PM
Where: 3760 Blair Oaks Drive
Cost: Per hour for bay
Park yourselves in a Topgolf bay for a night at the movies. Watch “The Good Dinosaur,” and challenge the family to a round of target practice. The menu is sans popcorn and candy, but the loaded cheese fries and donut holes injected with chocolate, raspberry, or Bavarian cream are just as satisfying. This spin on movie night only takes place once a month, so make sure to arrive early.
When: Saturday, August 6th
Time: 9-10AM
Where: Haggard Park, 901 E. 15th St., Plano
Find your center in Haggard Park during a free early morning yoga session. All skill levels are welcome to come attempt their best downward dog, warrior, tree, and cobra poses. This hour long workout is the best way to kick start your weekend and find your balance. Namaste my friends.
Downtown Plano Art and Wine Walk
When: Thursday, August 11th
Time: 5PM
Where: 1013 E. 15th St., Plano
Cost: $10 per person
For the 21 and older crowd, the Downtown Plano Art and Wine Walk is a can’t miss event. Wander the arts district and sample a plethora of wines as you peruse local shops. Live music will set the mood as you venture through pop-up art exhibits. Complete your passport of stops and you’ll be eligible to win during the gift certificate drawing. We recommend interrupting your walk with a meal at Lockhart Smokehouse or Urban Crust.
Zoo animals at the Carrollton Public Library
When: Saturday, August 13th
Time: 2-3PM
Where: Josey Ranch Lake Library, 1700 Keller Springs Rd., Carrollton
It’s a zoo at the library this August. We mean literally. Bring your elementary aged kids to the Carrollton Public Library for a live animal show. Zooniversity, a traveling wildlife education company, is hosting show and tell with several of their 50 species repertoire. Feast your eyes on a hissing cockroach, a bullfrog, or even a black-tailed prairie dog. It’s bound to be a wild time.
When: Monday-Saturday through August 20th
Time: 11-3PM
Where: Sci-Tech Discovery Center, 8004 N. Dallas Pkwy., Frisco
Cost: $8 per person
Have the next Albert Einstein at home? Then the Sci-Tech Discovery Makerspace is the perfect outing for your little scientist. Watch as your kids tinker with tools and electric hardware (under supervision of course) to construct mini cars and golf courses. This challenging experience is far from homemade volcanoes and potato clocks, giving kids the opportunity to imagine where their science skills can take them. Seating is limited, we recommend getting tickets in advance.
